 • Rename misc.log

Posted by Strike at 11:43 February 23, 2005
I think the name 'misc.log' stinks for our aggregate log, especially considering we have a plugin named 'Misc'. It just doesn't say what it is very well. My suggestions for the rename are:

* bot.log

* supybot.log

* <botnick>.log

* messages.log

I think all of these are better than 'misc.log' (and I'd say those are ranked in ascending order of I-like-it-ness, so the last one is my favorite). Thoughts? Reasons why we should not rename it? Better name ideas?

Actually, '<botnick>.log' is probably not a very good default because bot nicks can change and it may not connect with the nick it wanted. I guess we could do '<bot-realname>.log', since that's often the same as the primary nick used for the bot, but that kind of sucks too.

Now you see why I've thought the same thing for awhile and haven't yet changed it :)

I just haven't thought of a good new name.

Perhaps we can go the /var/log route and just call it "messages", since it's in a "logs" directory anyway.

Yeah, that's where the idea for messages.log came from, basically. Though considering we're cross-platform and Win32 folks like extension-y thingies, I'd rather keep the .log tacked on even if it's a bit redundant considering the directory structure.

Ok, I'm for changing it to messages.log.

That's nice because it also clears the way for a future errors.log or events.log or similar.
